Implant Dentistry: The Preferred Replacement for Missing Teeth
If you have one or more missing teeth, you may not realize how much their absence affects your oral and systemic health. In fact, missing teeth have been linked to several disadvantages and conditions, including:
- The inability to speak clearly
- The inability to properly chew foods or enjoy a well-rounded, high-nutrition diet
- A higher risk of developing gum disease
- Bone loss in the jaw
- A sunken-in appearance around the lips and cheeks
- Problems related to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers
- Lowered self-confidence, especially in social situations
Whether you are missing one or multiple teeth, implant-supported restorations give you the chance to avoid these issues and complete your smile.
Dental Implant Treatment Process
A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone beneath the gums. This post serves as an anchor for either a single dental abutment and crown, or a denture or bridge appliance.
The dental implant surgery will be performed under local anesthesia in our office. We use state-of-the-art equipment and the latest protocols to reduce risks and improve outcomes. As one study noted, success rates for single implants can be as high as 97.5 percent and a few percentage points lower for implant-supported dentures and bridges.[1]
After surgery, the implant will fuse with the bone over a period of several months. Once healed, the site is ready for a permanent customized crown or appliance.
Could You Be a Candidate for Implant Dentistry?
Every patient who visits Drs. Neighbors and Herod for an implant dentistry consultation will undergo a thorough examination. Not everyone is an immediate candidate for dental implants. Sometimes, a preparatory bone graft or sinus lift may be necessary to build enough support for your implants.
